AWS Managed Services (AMS) hands routine cloud operations, patching, monitoring, backup, incident response, over to Amazon’s team, following a consistent operating model backed by AWS’s own security and compliance framework. You still own architecture and performance decisions; AMS runs the day-to-day.

Startups typically use it to free up developers who would otherwise be doing operational upkeep; larger organizations use it for consistent governance across many workloads at once. Either way, you are trading operational overhead for AWS’s own operating practices.

Getting Started

A typical rollout starts with an inventory of applications, dependencies, and compliance requirements, then moves to AWS landing zone templates for secure, multi-account foundations before migrating actual workloads. What AMS Assumes You’ve Already Decided

It’s worth being clear about what AMS does and doesn’t replace. It runs operations against an architecture, it doesn’t design that architecture for you from scratch, and it doesn’t make the call on which services fit your workload in the first place. Teams that bring AMS in expecting a full strategy engagement are usually better served starting with an AWS Partner or a scoped architecture review first, then handing the resulting design to AMS to operate, rather than expecting AMS itself to answer “should we even be using DynamoDB here” as part of onboarding.

Cost and Security

Right-sizing reviews and reserved instances (up to 72% off on-demand rates for steady-state workloads) are the two biggest cost levers AMS applies. On the security side, AMS enforces continuous compliance policies, runs vulnerability scans, and feeds logs into CloudWatch and CloudTrail for real-time visibility, useful for meeting frameworks like PCI or HIPAA without building that tooling yourself.

Support is tiered (standard, business, enterprise), each adding faster response times.
