A group called the Secure Hosting Alliance, a working group of the i2Coalition, is trying to fix that with something more concrete than a review site.

Table of Contents

Who’s behind the Secure Hosting Alliance

What the Trust Seal actually checks

The collaboration piece: abuse intelligence sharing

Questions to Ask Any Host About Trust

Using a Trust Seal as One Signal Among Several

Why this matters when you’re figuring out how to choose a web host

Who’s behind the Secure Hosting Alliance

The alliance is led by David Snead, who’s worked in hosting since 1999, and launched roughly a year before he discussed it on a recent WP Tavern podcast. Its stated goal, in his words, is to “level up the ethics and professionalism in the hosting industry” and build more cooperation between hosts rather than treating every provider as purely a competitor.

As of the podcast, the alliance had grown to 25 hosting members and 3 security vendors. The more interesting number: 17 providers that had gone through its Trust Seal Certification process specifically.

What the Trust Seal actually checks

This is the part worth paying attention to, because it’s a concrete standard rather than a vague pledge. One explicit requirement: a hosting provider has to present a contract to the customer before they sign up — not bury terms in a post-purchase email, not rely on a “by using this service you agree” footer link nobody reads. That’s a low bar in absolute terms, but it’s a bar a meaningful number of hosts apparently don’t clear today, or the certification wouldn’t need to specify it.

The collaboration piece: abuse intelligence sharing

Separately from certification, the alliance works with the Internet Infrastructure Forum to enable what Snead calls “real-time intelligence sharing” about abuse issues, across registrars, hosting providers, and DNS services. In practice, that means a host that spots a pattern of fraud, spam, or attack traffic has a channel to flag it to other infrastructure providers before the same actor moves on to their platform next. That kind of cooperation is genuinely rare in an industry where providers mostly compete rather than share operational intelligence.

Questions to Ask Any Host About Trust

Whether or not a provider carries a trust seal, a few direct questions reveal a lot:

Do you show the contract and terms before I pay, in plain language?

Is there a written service level, and what do I receive if you miss it?

How do you handle abuse reports, both ones against your customers and ones from them?

Who owns the company, and where is it based?

Are you part of any industry effort on security or ethics, and can I check it?

Using a Trust Seal as One Signal Among Several

A certification can tell you that a provider met a published standard at a point in time, which is more than a marketing claim. It does not tell you how good support is, how fast sites load, or whether the plan fits your needs. Treat a seal as one input, alongside reviews from customers with similar sites, a test period, and the clarity of the provider’s own documentation. If a host is willing to answer your questions in writing, that is often the best sign of all.

Why this matters when you’re figuring out how to choose a web host

None of this replaces doing your own due diligence, and a hosting decision shouldn’t rest on a single seal. But it’s a useful signal to ask about: does a provider present clear contract terms upfront, and do they participate in any kind of industry-wide effort to catch abuse before it reaches you? Those are concrete, checkable things — a lot more checkable than a homepage claim about “enterprise-grade security.”

AllCloudHost’s own service level guarantees exist for the same underlying reason the Trust Seal does: hosting is a business built on trust that’s genuinely hard to verify from the outside, so the providers worth choosing are the ones willing to put commitments in writing rather than leave them implied.

Further reading: The Repository: first ten hosts certified under the Secure Hosting Alliance Trust Seal program.

Web hosting is a strange industry to shop in: the product is largely invisible until something goes wrong, and most buyers have…

A working group of hosts and security vendors is setting real professionalism standards for hosting.
