That gap between what people assume Google is grading and what it’s actually grading matters a lot for any small business using AI tools to help write product pages, blog posts, or store descriptions, because the actual bar has very little to do with whether an AI touched the draft.

Google’s Core Spam Rules and the contentEffort Signal

Google’s spam policies don’t name AI content as a violation category. Google’s own spam policies documentation names three categories relevant here, not called out in the Practical Ecommerce piece this post responds to but worth citing directly since they’re the actual enforced rules:

Scaled content abuse: mass-producing pages primarily to rank, not to inform.

Site reputation abuse: third-party content piggybacking on a host site’s authority.

Thin affiliation: affiliate-style pages whose product descriptions and reviews are copied from the original merchant without adding anything original.

An internal attribute called contentEffort, surfaced in an algorithm leak, appears to feed into how the helpful-content system scores a page, and the guidelines spell out the actual test raters are told to apply: the extent to which a human being actively worked to create satisfying content. That’s a test about outcome and evident care, not about which tool typed the words.

Low Effort Versus High Effort, Concretely

Google’s own framing draws a specific line.

Low-effort content: Repurposes existing information without adding sources or expert opinions, restates things that are already widely known, leans on stock or AI-generated imagery, and skips basic transparency like author identity or a publish date.

High-effort content: Includes original facts or a genuinely distinct perspective, goes into detail on less commonly known specifics with real expert input, uses original photography or screenshots instead of stock art, and draws on real personal or business experience with a transparent account of how any claims or recommendations were arrived at.

Notice what’s absent from both lists: nothing about word count, nothing about writing speed, nothing about which software produced the first draft. A thousand-word AI-assisted post built around a business’s own real numbers clears this bar more easily than a thousand-word human-typed post that just restates generic advice already covered a hundred times elsewhere.

Why Generic SEO Advice Here Doesn’t Fit a Small Business

Most coverage of this translates “show effort” into advice like “publish proprietary research” and “build topical authority with original data,” which assumes a content team, an analytics function, and a budget for surveys or studies. A two-person online store doesn’t have that, and pretending otherwise just produces another round of generic advice nobody can act on. The more honest translation for a small operation is narrower and far more achievable: effort signals don’t require a research department, they require using information you already have that a templated competitor page can’t.

Small-Business Effort Signals You Can Deploy Today

Original Photography: If you sell a physical product, photograph it yourself rather than using the manufacturer’s stock image; a slightly imperfect real photo of your own inventory is a stronger effort signal than a polished stock photo every competitor is also using.

Support Interactions: If customers ask you the same question repeatedly, that question and your actual answer is original content nobody else has, because it came out of your own support interactions, not a competitor’s page.

Operational Decisions: If you’ve made a specific business decision (why you chose a particular shipping carrier, why your return policy works the way it does, what actually went wrong the one time a shipment got delayed), that’s a concrete, specific, non-generic story a competitor’s AI-written page has no way to replicate, because it’s genuinely yours.

Using an AI tool to help structure or draft that material is fine under this standard; Google’s own language is explicit that appropriate use of AI or automation isn’t against its guidelines. The problem is using AI to generate the substance itself from nothing, producing a page that could just as easily describe any other store selling a similar product, with no detail in it that only your business could have supplied.

A Before and After Example

A generic, low-effort version of a product description might read: “Our ceramic mugs are durable, dishwasher-safe, and make a great gift for coffee lovers.” That sentence is true of thousands of ceramic mugs sold by thousands of stores, and an AI tool given almost any prompt about ceramic mugs will produce something close to it.

A version with real effort behind it looks different (this is an illustrative example, not a real store’s claim): “We switched to a thicker-walled ceramic glaze last year after customers told us the original batch chipped around the handle within a few months; the current mugs have survived over 400 dishwasher cycles in our own kitchen test without a chip.” The second version uses the same basic claim (durable, dishwasher-safe) but grounds it in a specific decision, a specific customer-driven reason, and a specific test result that no competitor selling a similar mug could truthfully copy. An AI tool can help phrase that sentence well.

It can’t invent the underlying fact; only the business itself has that.

A Practical Self-Check for Low Effort Content Before Publishing

Before publishing anything AI-assisted, ask one direct question about the draft: could a competitor’s AI tool have produced this exact page if given the same prompt with no access to your actual business? If the honest answer is yes, the content hasn’t cleared the effort bar yet regardless of how well it reads, and the fix isn’t rewriting it by hand, it’s adding something specific to your business that a prompt alone couldn’t have generated: a real photo, a real number, a real decision you made and can explain.

What to Do This Week About Low Effort Pages

Pick your three highest-traffic pages and run them through that self-check.

For any page that could have come from any competitor’s prompt, add one concrete, business-specific detail: a real photo, a real customer question and answer, or a specific number from your own operation.

That’s a more direct path to clearing Google’s actual bar than rewriting the prose to sound less like AI, since the guidelines were never grading the prose style in the first place.

Source: Practical Ecommerce.

Related reading: Microsoft’s Research Says AI Editing Corrupts 25-50% of Long Documents and Google’s August 2026 Spam Update: What Changed.

In short: Google doesn’t penalize AI content as such, it targets low effort content.
